This is reported by The Diplomat, reports Exclusive.kz. According to the publication, Kazakhstan has 21 of the 50 minerals recognized by the U.S. as critically important. Among them are uranium, copper, chromite and rare earth elements, which play a key role in the defense industry and the development of “green” technologies. Against the backdrop of the trade conflict between the US and China, the importance of countries that can ensure a stable supply of raw materials is growing. Currently, China controls about 60% of the world’s production of rare earth elements, which strengthens Washington’s interest in alternative partners.

Kazakhstan is actively building up its potential in the mining industry. In 2025, a record $127 million was allocated for geological exploration. President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev has previously emphasized the strategic importance of rare earth resources for the country’s economic development and international cooperation. In addition, Kazakhstan participates in international initiatives, including the Mineral Security Partnership Forum, which provides access to Western investment and technology.

At the same time, experts note that to fully strengthen its position, Kazakhstan needs to develop the processing of raw materials and modernize geological exploration. So far, the country is more of a supplier of resources, while the added value is formed abroad. Deepening cooperation with the U.S. will require more detailed agreements aimed not only at mining, but also at processing of critical minerals inside the country.

Analysts believe that such a step will allow Kazakhstan not just to gain a foothold in supply chains, but also to significantly strengthen its role in global competition for resources, turning raw material potential into a long-term economic advantage.
