Trump ruled out a nuclear strike on Iran and announced an extended truce between Israel and Lebanon

US President Donald Trump has said he does not intend to use nuclear weapons against Iran, as the US military, he claimed, has already destroyed the Iranian army's military capabilities. The White House chief also ordered the opening of fire on ships that lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz and said Israel and Lebanon had extended a truce for three weeks.

On Thursday night, Trump made several statements about the crisis in the Middle East during a White House press conference, bbc.com writes.

A reporter asked him if he might use nuclear weapons against Iran, and the US president called the question silly.

“Why would I want to do that? – he asked in response. – Why would I use nuclear weapons when we have completely destroyed them by conventional means, without using them? No one should be allowed to use nuclear weapons.”

Shortly before announcing a truce in the war against Iran, Trump threatened the authorities of that country with “the death of an entire civilization,” which some commentators interpreted as a discussion of the possibility of using weapons of mass destruction. In particular, Trump promised to destroy Iranian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether the US and Iran intend to resume peace talks. They were supposed to take place this week in Pakistan, but Iranian leaders refused to participate, explaining that the US continues to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, Trump promised that there could be “good news” about the talks by the end of the week, but so far there has been no new information on that. On Tuesday, the US president announced that the truce with Iran was being extended indefinitely and that he was waiting for concrete proposals from Tehran.
