According to the publication, General Dan Kane, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, informed the White House of a significant reduction in stockpiles of air defense interceptor missiles.
The New York Times also confirmed this information, citing sources in the White House.
The newspaper reported that Trump has so far abandoned plans to drastically escalate the military campaign against Iran after the military warned him of the risk of rapidly depleting stockpiles of missiles for the “Patriot” air defense systems and other air defense assets in the Middle East. Kane said that resuming large-scale strikes would almost certainly provoke a more powerful response from Iran and drastically increase the consumption of interceptors needed to protect U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
According to The New York Times, by the end of April, the Pentagon had already used more than 1,200 Patriot interceptor missiles, each costing over four million dollars, and since then, the military estimates that the situation with stockpiles has worsened even further.
