
The increase in military spending is included in the National Defense Development Program for 2026-2030, a draft of which was reviewed at a meeting of the secretaries of state.
The program, as stated in the explanatory note, “is aimed at modernizing and developing the national defense system: it is planned to strengthen the capabilities of the Armed Forces, ensure the modernization of equipment and integration of advanced technologies in the training of the national army, and improve the level of personnel training.
The document also provides for the functioning of mechanisms for mobilization and accounting of defense resources, as well as the introduction of the concept of national resistance.
The program envisages integration into the EU security architecture and development of international cooperation, expansion of partnerships and increasing compatibility with the defense structures of partners, which should contribute to strengthening national and regional security.
At the same time, the explanatory note notes, starting from 2025, a political commitment was made at the NATO level to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.
The implementation of the National Defense Development Program for 2026-2030 will require more than 10.6 billion lei. Of this amount, 4.26 billion lei is to be financed from the state budget, 3.69 billion lei from external assistance, and another 2.63 billion lei remain unsecured sources of financing.
The program is to be approved by the government.
