Farmers in the north of Moldova may have difficulties with irrigation

Farmers-water users have received notices on termination of water supply contracts concluded with this enterprise. in order to continue using water for irrigation, they need to conclude new contracts with licensed municipal operators who apply tariffs approved by ANRE. Farmers believe that there is a risk of significant increase in water costs and have doubts about the continuity of water supply at the height of the agricultural season.

MAIA’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry has intervened in the situation. The ministry’s state secretary, Vasile Charban, together with representatives of parliament and the state land reclamation agency, held consultations with farmers in Soroka. The search for solutions will continue.

Currently, in Moldova, irrigation water tariffs applied by water users associations range from 3.5 to 11 lei/cubic meter, with the most frequently set tariff being about 7 lei/cubic meter. In neighboring countries, water supply services to agricultural lands are much cheaper for farmers.
