Trump said they were able to reach a framework for a future deal on Greenland during the talks, which he called productive, and said the potential agreement would benefit the U.S. and all NATO members.
Recall, on January 17, Trump announced the introduction of import duties on goods from Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, France, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland. From February, the rate was to be 10%, and from June – 25%, unless an agreement is reached on the acquisition of Greenland by the United States. At the same time, Trump demanded that the levies remain in place until European countries support the deal with Denmark.
It has now been stated that the negotiations will be led by US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff, who will report directly to him. Trump also ruled out the possibility of the U.S. using force to take control of the Arctic island.
Rutte in Davos called for thoughtful diplomacy, noting tensions within the alliance and a willingness to find solutions on Greenland.
