Unlike a typical real estate sale, the price of a home here can be as low as one euro. However, the buyer will have to cover the costs associated with registering and restoring the building.
Specific terms are determined for each property. These are homes that require repair and restoration. It is precisely the need for further investment that allows owners to dispose of properties that have become a financial burden to maintain.
Why Owners Are Giving Away Their Homes
For some owners, old houses have become a financial burden. This is especially true for people who live outside the city themselves but continue to bear the costs associated with the property.
The Sicilian newspaper La Sicilia reports on this. According to the publication, the Vero Affare agency has signed agreements with Naro and the neighboring municipalities of Comitini, Suterà, and Bompensiere. Agency representatives stated that some owners preferred to simply transfer their properties for free, just to avoid paying the associated expenses and taxes.
For the city, this is an opportunity to attract new owners to buildings that would otherwise remain vacant and fall into disrepair.
The house costs €1, but repairs do not
The key caveat of the program is that a symbolic price does not mean symbolic costs.
Homes offered under similar Italian programs typically require major repairs. Buyers must factor in the cost of technical inspections, design work, construction, closing costs, and other mandatory expenses.
There are already examples of such properties on the market. In Sutera, where Vero Affare is also participating in the program, the agency is offering individual buildings in need of renovation for €1.
Therefore, this offer is not intended for buyers looking for ready-to-move-in, inexpensive housing, but rather for those willing to invest in restoring an old home.
It should be noted that programs selling homes for €1 are in place in several Italian regions, primarily in small towns with a large number of abandoned properties. In Sicily, such projects are already underway, particularly in Mussomeli, Sambuca di Sicilia, and other towns. In 2026, the list of Italian municipalities offering such properties continues to grow.
