Treated wastewater could become a new source of water for agriculture

The drought problem is most acute in the south of the country, where the highest number of water stress episodes has been recorded. Under these conditions, the authorities are proposing to explore the possibility of reusing treated wastewater to irrigate agricultural land. For example, in the Kahul, Kantemir, and Keushen districts, an additional 1,817 hectares could be irrigated with treated wastewater. This would increase the total area of irrigated land by approximately 40%.

Currently, Moldova lacks a comprehensive regulatory framework governing the safe reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture. The proposed draft regulation sets out requirements for water quality, monitoring, risk management, and the allocation of responsibilities between operators and competent authorities.

The new rules are being developed in line with European Union standards and are intended to reduce the burden on rivers and groundwater, as well as to increase the resilience of agriculture to the effects of climate change.

The draft regulation was developed by the Ministry of the Environment and is currently open for public comment.

The document was developed based on the results of research conducted as part of the “Green Agenda for Moldova” project, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). As part of the study, a scenario model was developed that takes into account precipitation patterns, crop water requirements, and irrigation deficits, which made it possible to identify realistic options for the reuse of treated wastewater.
