According to the state agency MOLDPRES, the research is carried out within the Green Agenda for Moldova project, funded through the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
“Based on the data collected, we prepared a scenario model that takes into account the precipitation regime, crop water demand and irrigation deficit to identify realistic options for reuse of treated wastewater. This approach contributes to the development of a national methodology for cyclical water management, a concrete step towards adaptation to the effects of climate change,” said Arnaud Rosemarin, SEI study leader.
Next steps include creating specific scenarios for each pilot zone, including options for water storage and distribution; conducting a cost-benefit analysis of the use of treated wastewater in agriculture. As well as assessing environmental and public health risks and further harmonizing the national legal framework with European standards.
SEI experts met with representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Swedish Embassy and SIDA to discuss progress made and identify new opportunities for cooperation. At the same time, a workshop was held to exchange experience within the EU4Green Recovery East initiative, aimed at integrating the findings into other green transition and climate change adaptation programs.
Thanks to this initiative, the Republic of Moldova will be able to strengthen its capacity to combat droughts, protect natural resources and ensure sustainable development of the agro-industrial sector.
