“We will not allow what has been achieved in the capital’s schools to be destroyed in Chisinau because of decisions made in ministerial offices,” he wrote on social media. “At the same time, you have demonstrated that you are incapable of building even a single school.”
The statements were made following criticism voiced by Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun regarding Ion Ceban’s initiative to hold a referendum on transferring schools from local authorities to central government control.
Ion Ceban views this reform as an attempt by the Ministry of Education and Research to “establish political control over schools.” It does not provide for improved working conditions, higher salaries, or reduced bureaucracy, but rather transfers control to the ministry, the mayor believes.
“Despite the fact that there has been talk of decentralization for many years, we are now seeing a push toward the political centralization of institutions. The same thing has already been done with hospitals. What has been modernized in the hospitals? Nothing,” he emphasized.
The mayor announced that he will present his own initiative regarding the situation in education.
