Ion Ceban: Instead of the promised reduction in the size of the government, the authorities will expand it

The mayor of the capital continues to comment on the RESTART education reform. The government intends to create more than 30 agencies under the education departments, warns Mayor Ion Ceban.

“They’ll create new positions for their people in the new agencies—new structures, new positions, and new leaders—while teachers will be left waiting,” the mayor laments.

“I followed the new government’s first meeting. They talked about a lot of things.

But about the biggest reform in education… almost nothing.”

More than a hundred schools in Chisinau and hundreds across the country are to be transferred to government control, he continues.

The decision was made without clear explanations or answers to the simplest questions:

Who will manage the property?

Who will maintain the schools?

Who will be responsible for investments, for the children’s safety, and for coordinating with local authorities?

“Education is not a political experiment. A reform affecting every child, every teacher, and every family in Moldova was adopted in a rush, by a simple show of hands and without serious discussion,” concludes Ion Ceban.

As Logos Press previously reported, the RESTART reform has raised numerous questions among the capital’s teaching community, which is calling for a referendum on the issue.
