The young man was suffering from decompensated liver cirrhosis, and a transplant was the only way to save his life. Doctors transplanted the right lobe of the liver from a living donor—a 43-year-old male relative of the family.
This complex surgery was made possible by a multidisciplinary team that included surgeons, anesthesiologists and intensivists, pediatricians, and intensive care specialists.
“The operation was successful, and the postoperative period proceeded favorably. Cases like this require thorough preparation and the involvement of specialists from various fields of medicine,” — noted Professor Adrian Hotinanu, head of the Department of Surgery No. 2 at the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
“The success of a pediatric transplant is the result of flawless collaboration between surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, intensive care specialists, and many other professionals,” said Igor Ambros, a pediatric surgeon at the Institute of Mother and Child.
After the operation, the teenager was monitored by specialists in the intensive care unit and then transferred to the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery for further recovery. He is currently at home and continuing treatment as prescribed by his doctors.
This is the fifth pediatric liver transplant performed in the Republic of Moldova. This achievement confirms the development of the national transplant program and the ability of Moldovan medical teams to perform the most complex surgical procedures at a high level.
