Green Walnuts will soon be available in stores in Moldova and Romania

Starting in early August, Moldova will see the start of the season for the organized sale of young walnuts in their green shells—through supermarket chains, in consumer-sized packages. Prices for this “niche” product—which is already quite expensive—will not rise compared to last year, as promised by its producers.

In 2025, fresh green walnuts were sold at retail for 95–115 lei/kg—depending on the package size and material (3–5 kg, cardboard box, paper or plastic perforated bag, mesh), as well as the sales channel (store, home delivery).

As Lilian Florea, owner of the walnut-growing company Pomul Regal, noted to Logos Press, this year’s spring and summer rainfall had a twofold effect on the walnut plantation. On the one hand, the effect was negative: the moisture triggered diseases and fruit drop, with losses estimated at 10–20%. On the other hand, the effect was positive: thanks to sufficient moisture, the walnuts—at least those from plantations of early-maturing varieties—will, for the most part, be large in size.

In addition to a wider presence on supermarket shelves in the Republic of Moldova, local walnut growers plan to begin exporting walnuts in their green husks to Romania.
