The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development is proposing a reform that will last until 2028 and calls for replacing the so-called road toll with a vehicle tax, as well as expanding the vignette system.

The authors of the amendments explain that they are being introduced to ensure fairer and more sustainable funding for road infrastructure.

According to the document, one of the main changes involves replacing the current road usage tax with a vehicle tax, which will be collected by local authorities.

The ministry notes that the change will help create a more transparent system for collecting funds intended for road maintenance.

Another measure involves the broader use of vignettes to bring the road toll system into compliance with European legislation.

The document “Reform of the Road Toll System” has been released for public consultation.

Suggestions and recommendations may be submitted from July 16 through August 15 via email to [email protected] with the subject line “Consultations on Road Toll Reform,” in writing to the ministry, or through the particip.gov.md platform.
