Infant mortality has been declining

According to official data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the infant mortality rate in 2025 declined significantly. The decline in infant mortality, along with an overall reduction in the number of deaths in the country (to 13.5 per 1,000 inhabitants), was one of the key factors contributing to the increase in life expectancy in Moldova, which, by the end of 2025, had risen by nearly 10 months to 72.8 years.

The mortality rate fell to 9.2 cases per 1,000 newborns, compared with 11.8 cases a year earlier. Infant mortality remained slightly higher among boys than among girls, and this gender difference is typical of the entire human population worldwide.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 204 children died before reaching their first birthday in 2025—76 fewer than in 2024.

This statistically significant indicator reflects the quality of medical care, the standard of living, and the effectiveness of the entire maternal and child health care system. According to data from the World Health Organization, this indicator is highly sensitive to any socioeconomic changes.
