Elon Musk believes that energy from space has the potential to transform the global economy

Elon Musk has once again drawn attention to one of the most ambitious technological concepts—harvesting solar energy in space. In his view, if humanity learns to harness this resource on an industrial scale, the economic value of such technology will exceed the size of Earth’s entire modern economy.

Behind this statement lies not so much futurism as an idea that is increasingly being discussed by scientists, engineers, and investors.

““If solar energy in space is used for useful work on a large scale, its value will far exceed that of the Earth’s economy, since all of Earth’s civilization consumes far less than one trillionth of our Sun’s energy,” Musk wrote on social media platform X.

This idea reflects the fundamental dependence of the modern economy on energy. The development of artificial intelligence, the construction of data centers, hydrogen production, metallurgy, water desalination, and many other industries require ever-increasing amounts of electricity. As energy consumption grows, the availability of cheap energy is becoming one of the key factors in economic development.

Why is space specifically being discussed?

Unlike solar power plants on Earth, orbital power systems can operate virtually continuously. They are not affected by the cycle of day and night, weather conditions, or cloud cover, and solar radiation intensity is higher outside the atmosphere.

The concept of space-based solar power plants has been under discussion for several decades. It is envisioned that electricity generated in space could be transmitted to Earth using microwave or laser radiation. For now, such projects remain experimental, but interest in them is growing as space launches become more affordable.

SpaceX Is Changing the Economics of Space Projects

This is precisely where Musk’s ideas take on a practical dimension. If the cost of launching cargo into orbit continues to decline thanks to reusable rockets, the construction of large-scale power facilities in space will no longer seem like mere science fiction.

The Starship transport system currently under development by SpaceX is seen as one of the factors that could, in the long run, radically reduce the cost of delivering equipment to orbit. This could make projects economically viable that were, until recently, considered too expensive.

This is about a new economic model

Essentially, Musk is proposing to view the global economy through the lens of energy constraints. Today, the volume of goods and services produced is largely determined by the availability of energy. This is also beginning to seriously hinder the development of the AI economy, as Logos Press has reported.

If this factor ceases to be in short supply, the possibilities for economic growth will also change.

This idea echoes the concept of Soviet astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev, who proposed evaluating the level of civilization development based on the amount of energy used. According to this model, the transition to using the resources of one’s own star opens up a fundamentally new stage of technological development.

Practical implementation is still a long way off

Despite growing interest in space-based energy, experts emphasize that the technology faces serious engineering challenges. These include the cost of building orbital power plants, maintaining infrastructure in space, and the safe and efficient transmission of energy to Earth.

Therefore, Musk’s statements should be viewed, for now, more as a perspective on the long-term direction of the global economy than as an announcement of a specific project. However, the discussion itself shows that the tech industry is increasingly focusing not only on new models of artificial intelligence but also on a fundamental question: where will humanity get the energy for the economy of the future?

The interest in this topic is evident from the fact that, within four hours, Musk’s tweet garnered over 2 million views and 1,600 comments.
