US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to visit India amid tensions with China

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is making a visit to India from May 23 to 26, a major step in the U.S. effort to strengthen relations with India amid growing rivalry with China.

According to Reuters, Rubio’s visit will focus on security, trade, technology cooperation and coordination in the Indo-Pacific region. Special attention is expected to be paid to U.S.-India relations in the context of China’s increasing influence and growing geopolitical risks in Asia.

According to the agency, the Trump administration is seeking to restore a more sustained political dialog with New Delhi after a period of uncertainty in bilateral relations. The talks could also center on supply chains, defense cooperation and joint technology projects.

The U.S. is trying to strengthen the alliance system

India remains a key partner of the US in its strategy to contain China and diversify global production chains. Increased contacts between Washington and New Delhi could affect international trade, technology markets, and the balance of power in Asia.
