Canada has reduced its purchases of Moldovan wine

Moldovan wine exports to Canada fell sharply in 2025, despite the opportunities created by a sharp decline in shipments from the United States. According to Comtrade data, the value of Moldovan wines exported to the Canadian market fell to $4.07 million from $5.49 million in 2024, representing a decline of approximately 26%.

In the ranking of wine suppliers to Canada, Moldova ranks 14th, behind such well-known producers as France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, Portugal, and Argentina, according to forbes.ro.

The decline in Moldovan exports contrasts with the trends seen in other exporting countries. Wine imports to Canada from the U.S. fell by 76.8%, from $431 million to nearly $100 million, freeing up a significant share of the market. The main beneficiaries were France and Italy, which increased their exports by approximately $68 million and $31 million, respectively. Australia, Chile, and New Zealand also recorded significant growth.

Overall, the Canadian wine market contracted in 2025. The total value of imports fell by about 7%, from $2.08 billion to $1.94 billion. Even under these conditions, the trends indicate that Moldovan producers were unable to capitalize on the opportunity created by the partial withdrawal of their American competitors and lost market share at a time that was favorable for exporters.
