The agency notes that there are practically no precedents in the world for placing photos of incumbent leaders in passports, and Trump will be the first sitting US president whose image will appear in the documents of Americans.
The State Department said it would issue a limited-edition passport in honor of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, which is celebrated this year.
The State Department posted a sample passport on social media that shows a stern-looking Trump superimposed over the text of the Declaration of July 4, 1776. Beneath the image is Trump’s signature in gold.
The second limited-edition passport features a historical painting of the U.S. Founding Fathers.
“As the United States celebrates America’s 250th birthday in July, the State Department is preparing to issue a limited number of specially designed U.S. passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.
Another department official, who requested anonymity, said it would only be possible to obtain a passport with Trump’s image by visiting the Washington, D.C., office in person “for as long as they are available.”
The passports will be issued at no additional cost, the official said.
It’s not yet clear whether applicants will be able to opt out of Trump’s image.
In addition, as noted, most Americans applying for passports do so through local post offices, which will not provide this special version.
Current U.S. passports depict various scenes from the country’s history, such as the moon landing, as well as historical sites including the Statue of Liberty.
