Strange Demographics: Fewer People, More Officials

While Moldova's population continues to decline, the size of the government bureaucracy, on the contrary, is growing. Economic expert Tatiana Iovv reported this on her social media page.

According to data she published, the number of civil servants in the country has increased by approximately 26,000 compared to 2019.

“While in 2019 there were 9 ministries and 31,602 civil servants, in 2026 there will be 16 ministries and 57,954 civil servants. That’s an increase of 26,000 well-paid jobs,” Iovv noted.

In this regard, the expert raises some quite natural questions: if the country’s population is shrinking, whom does this ever-growing army of bureaucrats serve, and to what end? Especially against the backdrop of constant statements by the authorities about cost optimization, digitalization, and improving the efficiency of public administration?

As Logos Press previously reported, Moldova is among the countries with the fastest-shrinking populations.
