Pensioners who wish to work should be included in labor market policy—an opinion

Maya Bănărescu, a lawyer and expert who formerly served as ombudsman and children’s rights advocate, believes that the authorities should include older adults in their development strategies and measures to revitalize the labor market. In her article, she emphasized that retirees who are willing and able to work represent an important resource that is, however, underutilized.

Bănescu noted that, amid discussions about the political and economic crisis, proposals such as raising the retirement age are being put forward, yet there are no concrete measures to integrate retirees into the workforce.

“But what about us—those of us who are already retired but want to work and are part of the labor force? The ‘Active Aging’ program is dead, or, let’s put it this way, it still shows signs of life in some places,” Banarescu wrote.

She argues that existing support measures are insufficient or remain merely on paper, and calls on the authorities, as well as experts developing development strategies, to pay closer attention to this group of citizens.

“I suggest that the authorities and experts who will be developing plans and strategies take this group of people into account. They truly are an important resource for resolving the labor market crisis in the Republic of Moldova. Let’s start with our own citizens, provide them with jobs, and only then rely on foreign migrant workers,” said Maia Bănărescu.
