The main topics of the talks are digital services, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and integration into the EU’s Digital Single Market.
Moldova’s Optimism
Preparations for the negotiations were discussed on June 11 during an expanded meeting of the iConsiliu Advisory Council on the Digitalization of the Economy, organized by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Digitalization (MDED) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Economic Council under the Prime Minister.
According to the ministry, Moldova continues to adapt its legislation and digital policy to European requirements under Chapter 10, which is part of Cluster 3, “Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth.”
State Secretary for Digitalization and Innovation Michelle Ilie reported that the country has already achieved a number of milestones in digital transformation. In particular, more than 78% of public services for businesses have been digitized, the country has joined the European “Roam Like at Home” zone, and the ICT sector accounts for about 8% of GDP.
“An extremely intense period lies ahead of us, but we view it with great optimism. We have set ourselves the goal of provisionally closing Chapter 10 (Information Society and Media) as part of the EU accession negotiations by the end of the year. We have made significant progress, recognized at the European level, even surpassing some EU member states in this area,” stated Michelle Iliev.
AI, 5G, and Digital Identification
One of the key areas of preparation remains alignment with new European regulations governing the digital economy.
This involves further harmonizing approaches in the fields of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductors, and the sustainability of digital products, taking into account current and upcoming EU initiatives.
In the field of electronic communications, discussions focused on preparations for implementing the requirements of the Gigabit Infrastructure Act, developing a regulatory framework for 5G network security, and harmonizing rules for electronic identification and trust services.
A separate area of focus is the preparation for the implementation of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), which is intended to facilitate the use of digital services within the European Union.
The authorities are paying special attention to Moldova’s integration into the European artificial intelligence governance ecosystem and leveraging the potential of the Moldova Innovation Technology Park to attract investment and foster the growth of technology companies.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the business community, industry associations, government agencies, and development partners.
