At the same time, Moldova is the only country in Europe where more people live in villages and communes than in cities and municipalities.
Most of these countries are located in sub-Saharan Africa, with a small number remaining in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the Caribbean.
Overall, the share of the rural population worldwide has declined from about two-thirds in 1960 to about 43% today.
That said, our closest neighbors are not far behind us. In Romania, the share of the rural population is 45.12%, while in Ukraine it is only 29.72%.
Interestingly, the list includes seven countries with no rural residents at all. These are Bermuda, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macau, Monaco, and Singapore.
