May frosts caused great damage to Moldova’s gardens

The frosts of the first nights of May have significantly changed for the worse the estimates of damage to the fruit sector of Moldova from spring frosts. According to the first impression of fruit business operators, from a quarter to a third of the total area of orchards in the country was significantly affected.

Fruit crops. Peach, cherry and sweet cherry orchards were most affected. There are evidences of 100% crop loss in some orchards. There were cases of freezing of generative organs of plants in plum, walnut and even apple plantations.

Regions. Expectedly, gardens in the north of Moldova suffered most of all. But there are affected plantations in the center and in the south-east of the country. The situation is more or less favorable only in some south-western regions. Almost everywhere gardens located in lowlands suffered from night frosts in early May. Frosts of -2-4 degrees Celsius were recorded there on previous nights, which is very dangerous for flowering fruit trees.

Representatives of insurance companies say that this morning they have received “not a few reports from clients about the complete destruction of fruit crops”. Taking into account the small number of contracts for insurance against spring frosts (due to a large number of objective reasons) it can be concluded that the damage is of mass character.

It is not clear yet what the consequences will be. For example, last year, according to the first assessment, May frosts severely damaged plum orchards, but later, in fact, the 2025 plum harvest was not bad.

Earlier, horticultural organizations of Ukraine repeatedly reported the loss of at least 50% of stone fruit crop.
