Maia Sandu: “The EU is no longer a distant goal, but a reality we are building”

Moldova has begun accession negotiations with the European Union under Cluster 1—“Fundamental Values.” The intergovernmental conference that launched this phase took place on Monday, June 15, in Luxembourg. The country’s delegation was led by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.

The head of government stated that this step confirms the authorities’ fulfillment of their commitments. He emphasized that this cluster forms the foundation of the entire negotiation process:

“The entire accession process is based on democracy, the rule of law, respect for fundamental rights, effective public administration, and sustainable public finances. These are values that the Republic of Moldova shares with European countries, and reforms that people expect from government institutions.”

According to the government press service, “the prime minister confirmed that the Republic of Moldova’s goal remains unchanged: our country must be ready to assume the obligations of a European Union member state by 2030.”

President Maia Sandu, in turn, noted that the launch of this group of heads is a necessary step aimed at bringing national legislation into line with European standards in the areas of justice, the fight against corruption, and respect for fundamental human rights.

“We have achieved this thanks to the joint work and efforts of people who believe in the European future of the Republic of Moldova. Our country is moving forward, and the path ahead requires continued perseverance. But today we have yet another reason to be confident: the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union is no longer a distant goal, but a reality that we are creating,” Sandu noted.

This was the second intergovernmental conference since the official start of accession negotiations in June 2024. The decision to officially open negotiations on Cluster 1 will be finalized at the EU summit in Brussels, which will take place on June 18–19.
