Romanian Transport Minister Ciprian Sherban, who tendered his resignation on Wednesday, emphasized after his statement was made public that the decision to raise fares was proposed by Metrorex’s board of directors.
“You know that the minister does not manage Metrorex, it is primarily managed by the board of directors. It was a proposal by the board of directors. He followed all the procedural steps, it came to me, I signed that order,” the minister was quoted the minister’s explanation by HotNews.ro.
He also noted that “the cost of electricity has increased by 160% since the last increase in the price per trip until now.” Fare prices in the Bucharest metro were last changed on January 1, 2025, from 3 lei to 5 lei.
Higher electricity, water and fuel costs were also among the reasons cited by Metrorex’s board of directors.
Metrorex requested the following new fares:
– the cost of a single trip – 7 lei instead of 5 lei;
– cost of a monthly pass – 140 lei instead of 100 lei;
– cost of a card for 24 hours – 18 lei instead of 12 lei.
The Bucharest metro transports 156 million passengers annually. There are five main lines and 63 stations.
