The day before, on May 13, two partners of New Unity in the coalition government – the Progressives and the Union of Greens and Peasants – made statements that Silinia’s government had “actually fallen”. This was reported by the Delfi newspaper.

It notes that today in the Seimas, at the opposition’s suggestion, a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Evika Silina could take place. In fact, the prime minister announced her resignation without waiting for the vote, the outcome of which was predetermined.

“It is not easy, but it is a fair decision,” Silinya said at a special press briefing.

Before her resignation, Silinya signed orders to suspend Agriculture Minister Armand Krause (Union of Greens and Peasants) and State Chancellery chief Raivis Kronbergs, who were detained the previous day by the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) in the so-called forestry support case.

The President will hold consultations

As Delfi notes, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics is already holding a marathon of meetings with all parliamentary factions at the Rīga Castle. The head of state said on May 13 that Latvia cannot afford political uncertainty and instability in the current situation.

Saeima deputy from the opposition United List Edvards Smiltens said that the “core” of the new government could be his party, the opposition “New” Unity and the now coalition Union of Greens and Peasants.

At the same time, the leader of the National Union Indra Indriksone also said that they are ready to take over the formation of the new government.

All political forces in Latvia believe that although five months remain before the next Saeima elections, the country needs a new government.
