Google Photos will turn your phone into a smart closet – and it will decide what you’re wearing

Google is preparing a major update for the Google Photos service, which could change the usual way of working with personal shots of clothes. A new function based on artificial intelligence will automatically analyze the images in the gallery and form a full-fledged virtual closet of the user.

The system will recognize items of clothing and shoes in photos and then categorize them into categories: outerwear, pants, dresses, accessories and jewelry. Based on this data, algorithms will be able to suggest ready-made combinations of items, helping the user to assemble new looks from the existing closet.

Developers note that the purpose of the feature is to simplify the daily choice of clothes. According to Tommy Mini, senior product manager for Google Photos, the technology is designed to reduce “morning stress associated with the feeling that there is nothing to wear” and make the process of selecting images more intuitive and faster.

One of the key innovations will be a virtual fitting tool. The user will be able to press a special button and see how the selected set of clothes looks on his digital avatar. Previously, such technologies were used mainly in online stores to try on new products, but now Google is adapting them to work with existing items fixed on the photo.

The feature will be integrated into Google Photos and will start rolling out gradually to Android devices over the summer. For iOS users, no release date has yet been revealed.

Experts note that Google is actually pushing the boundaries of computer vision, turning the photo gallery into a personal styling tool. Similar solutions already exist on the market: for example, the Acloset app from the South Korean startup Looko, which uses neural networks to create a digital closet and select images. Integrating such technology into the Google ecosystem could significantly increase its mass distribution.
