Corentin is studying for a Master’s degree in tourism management in France and won the NEC Challenge, a competition dedicated to promoting responsible tourism. He received a prize of 1,000 euros and developed an eco-friendly itinerary with a low carbon footprint. Corentin’s journey took almost two weeks, according to Moldova 1.

Setting off on 19 August, he travelled through several European countries, stopping off in Italy, Austria, Hungary and Romania before arriving in the Moldovan capital. The idea to visit the country came to him by chance: whilst studying a map, he noticed Moldova, became interested in its tourist potential and decided to set off.

“At some point, I opened Google Maps and saw Moldova. I said to myself, ‘Look, this seems like an interesting country.’ I started looking up what there was to visit here and set off, not realising I’d end up liking the country so much,” says Corentin.

This is the young man’s fifth visit to the country, but travelling by train gave him a fresh perspective on the journey.

Impressions of Chișinău and local traditions

For Corentin, one of the most striking places in Moldova remains Chisinau’s Central Market. According to him, French markets are often highly specialised – either food markets or craft markets – whereas the Chisinau market is striking for its diversity, authenticity and the opportunity to experience local culinary traditions first-hand through produce from local producers.

The traveller was impressed by the country’s architectural and natural attractions. During his trip, he managed to visit the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, Kurki Monastery and the ‘Old Orhei’ historical and archaeological complex.

Corentin admits that he discovered many unplanned spots whilst travelling along Moldova’s roads. In future, the French student plans to return to the country to explore the northern regions and the famous underground wine cellars of Cricova, which he did not have time to visit on this occasion.
