Xabi Alonso in January this year was fired from Real Madrid, which he led since May 2025. Before that, the Spaniard successfully coached Bayer Leverkusen since 2022, which attracted the attention of the Royal Club from Madrid.

Xabi Alonso has had a great career as a soccer player. He has played for Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. In total, he took 17 trophies with clubs and the Spanish national team as a player, including becoming a two-time Euro champion (2008, 2012) and World Cup winner (2010).

Chelsea London started the 2025-2026 season with head coach Enzo Maresca, who was replaced by Liam Rosenior in January. But he was also dismissed in April amid poor results and poor performance of the team.

The appointment of Xabi Alonso came immediately after Saturday’s FA Cup final, where Chelsea lost to Manchester City. The Londoners are in ninth place in the English league (outside the European Cup zone) with two matches to go.
