Borders will be strengthened in line with EU standards

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), with financial support from the European Union and in cooperation with the Government of Moldova, has launched a new EU project on borders and customs in Moldova (EUBAC). This new initiative will coordinate the authorities’ efforts to improve border management and the operations of the Customs Service.

Over a period of 24 months, the project will provide technical expertise and practical assistance to the relevant national authorities. In particular, this involves improving legislation, customs procedures and institutional capacity.  Particular attention will be paid to the digitalisation and interoperability of customs, tax and border control systems, as well as to the introduction in Moldova of standards and practices in line with those of the EU.

The project will also help to strengthen the operational and analytical capabilities of the Moldovan authorities needed to combat cross-border and organised crime, including smuggling, tax evasion and illicit cross-border financial flows. Support will include technical assessments, specialised training, practical exercises, expert support and equipment for the relevant national authorities.

EUBAC will work closely with the Customs Service, the State Tax Service, the General Directorate of Border Police and the General Directorate of Police, as well as other national agencies. The project will involve experts from EU Member States, as well as foreign and national specialists in the customs and tax sectors.
