According to state gemological experts, the found mineral is recognized as the most valuable ruby ever discovered in the country, AP writes. The stone is distinguished by a rich purplish-red color with noticeable yellowish tints, as well as moderate transparency and a characteristic glassy luster.
Although in 1996 in the same area they already found a ruby of much greater weight – about 4290 grams, the new specimen is estimated higher in quality and internal structure. In gemological practice, it is purity and color that often play a more important role than the weight of the stone.
Ruby originates from the Mogok region of upper Mandalay, which historically provides a significant portion of the world’s supply of these gemstones. The geological conditions of the region are unique: rubies are formed in marble rocks that have been subjected to high temperatures and pressure during metamorphic processes. The characteristic red hue of the stones is imparted by chromium impurities that enhance their luminescence, which is especially noticeable in the ultraviolet spectrum.
After the discovery, the find was taken to the capital of Nay Pyi Taw, where it was examined by the head of state Min Aung Hlaing in the presence of high-ranking officials and military commanders.
Meanwhile, gemstone mining in the region remains closely linked to political instability. According to human rights organizations, including Global Witness, the ruby trade is often used to finance armed groups and military structures.
International sanctions and post-2021 restrictions have made it difficult to legally sell large Burmese stones, and some production goes to shadow markets through neighboring countries, including Thailand and China.
The fate of the new ruby has not yet been determined: the authorities have not said whether it will be preserved, faceted or put up for international auction.
