A “heat dome” is looming over Europe

Europe is bracing for another wave of debilitating heatwaves this week. Stifling heat is expected in the south and southwest, including Portugal, Spain and France, with daytime highs of up to 38 °C; much of France has been placed on a moderate heat warning. In northern countries such as Germany and the UK, maximum values exceed 30 °C.

Forecasters from the Severe Weather Europe project warn that temperatures are soaring 12-16°C above “long-term climatological norms”. The French meteorological office Météo-France attributes the unusually high temperatures to a “heat dome”. Severe Weather Europe agrees that an “extremely abnormal and powerful heat dome” is “stuck over Western and Central Europe”.

“In the coming days, the air mass in many countries will become even hotter as the heat dome further strengthens in the upper atmosphere,” the forecast says (source in English). – As this configuration limits vertical exchange and cloud formation, both maximum and minimum temperatures will approach historical monthly records at hundreds of weather stations in Western Europe.”
