
According to Politico, citing four NATO diplomats, the initiative was put forward by Germany. It provides for the creation of a new funding mechanism that should make allies’ contributions more transparent and predictable. The reason for the discussion was disagreements within the alliance over the distribution of the burden of support for Kiev.
About 40 billion euros of the total package may be new obligations of NATO countries. Another 30 billion euros are planned to be accounted for by the already agreed EU loan to Ukraine for 90 billion euros, Politico’s sources said.
It should be noted that support for Ukraine will be one of the key topics of the upcoming summit in Ankara, which will be held on July 7-8. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier called the meeting “decisive” for the future of the alliance.
The Ukrainian side expects the new commitments to focus on Kiev’s priorities – air defense systems, production of drones and missiles, and long-range munitions, Ukrainian Ambassador to NATO Alena Hetmanchuk said.
