The head of state emphasized that despite the information campaigns conducted by the authorities, statistics show that many people continue to fall into the traps of criminals. She explained that many of these schemes are coordinated from abroad, making it almost impossible for law enforcement agencies to recover the money.

The head of state directly called for family and community solidarity, asking those who know about these risks to talk to their neighbors, friends, and especially elderly relatives.

“When it comes to their money, they should think 100 times, check 100 times before giving that money to someone. And while we’ve seen better communication recently from agencies to inform and warn about these risks, the statistics show that there are still a lot of people who fall into these traps,” the president said during the Jurnal Politic podcast

Algorithm of action

Maia Sandu recommended a simple algorithm of actions in case of receiving a suspicious call: citizens should interrupt the conversation under any pretext, and then check the situation and consult people they trust, such as children, relatives or even the mayor of the locality, before making any financial transfer.

The President cited a recent method used by fraudsters to require citizens to pay fake traffic fines. She warned that while the messages may look authentic, no payment should be made without careful verification that the bank account is correct.

“The state will not be able to protect 100 percent. It is very difficult to get the money back, especially since many of these schemes are organized from outside the country, where the police and other agencies have no opportunity to intervene and punish. Therefore – maximum vigilance. It is very sad about what is happening, and it is a bit surprising for me to see that so many people give money so easily without studying the information,” Sandu said.
