The decline was mainly due to the reduction of capital repair works, which decreased by 23.5%. At the same time, maintenance and current repair works decreased by 13.1%, and the volume of new construction decreased by 7.1%.

The largest decrease was recorded in the segment of non-residential buildings, including commercial, industrial and administrative premises. Here the volume of works decreased by 27.6%.

In contrast, the residential sector maintained growth. Works on construction of residential buildings increased by 2.8%, becoming one of the few segments that showed positive dynamics in the first three months of the year.

The statistics also show that work in the “other construction work” category, which includes demolition and land development, increased by 5.2%, despite the negative trend in the sector.

The NBS data also highlights the change in trend from last year. The construction sector recorded a growth of 18.7% in the first quarter of 2025, but the beginning of 2026 brought a return to negative territory.

Of the total work performed in the first quarter, new construction accounted for the largest share at 52.1%. This was followed by maintenance and repair work (23.3%) and major repairs, which accounted for 20.6% of the total.
