Maia Sandu was awarded the Order of European Merit. What incident almost spoiled the ceremony?

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has received the Order of European Merit. This is a new award established on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. Its goal is to recognize an outstanding contribution to the European integration and protection of the EU values. The head of state called the award a great honor.

“This award belongs to the people of Moldova – those who chose Europe at the elections, those who defended this choice when it was not easy, and those who carry out difficult reforms every day because they believe in a better future. We are ready to open negotiations in all clusters. Both the Commission and the Council say we are ready. Moldova fulfills its commitments step by step. A credible, merit-based accession process requires effort on both sides. And Moldova is doing its part,” Sandu said at the ceremony.

The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola also called the event a great honor, noting that over the years she has observed “strength, clarity and steadfastness” of Maia Sandu.

“Your commitment not only shapes Moldova, but also influences the whole of Europe,” Metsola said. “My message today is very clear: the European Parliament will continue to support Moldova in every possible way.”

As Logos Press previously wrote, along with Maia Sandu, a number of other politicians, diplomats and public figures were honored with this award.

During Maia Sandu’s speech, an incident occurred: former Romanian MP Cristian Rizia started shouting accusations against her. Security promptly escorted him out of the room.
