Moldova gets closer to “industrial visa-free travel” with the EU

Measuring instruments validated in the European Union will be recognized in Moldova as well. The Commission for Agriculture and Food Industry will consider next week a draft law amending the rules in the field of metrology and accreditation to bring the Moldovan system in line with European standards. The draft was previously approved by parliament in the first reading.

Companies importing meters, scales, gauges or other equipment that have already been inspected in an EU Member State will not have to go through all the procedures again in Moldova. Documents issued in the EU will be recognized based on the principle of mutual recognition.

The National Institute of Metrology will be responsible for the examination and recognition of these documents.

The authorities claim that the changes are necessary to bring Moldova closer to the European market and to prepare for the signing of the ACAA (Agreement on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products). This agreement is also called “industrial visa-free travel” because it provides for mutual recognition of the results of conformity assessment of industrial products between Moldova and the European Union, which will allow exporting goods without additional checks.

The project also provides for changes in the procedure for setting tariffs for metrology and accreditation services, as well as simplification of some administrative procedures in this area.

Most of the provisions will enter into force on January 1, 2027, while the norms concerning the recognition of European metrological verifications – from June 24, 2026.
