Wine is central to Moldovan identity, and few countries appreciate it as much.

This year’s annual celebration of National Wine Day will be held in Chisinau on October 3-4, 2026, the National Bureau of Vine and Wine (NBVV) announced.

Held on the first weekend of October every year, the festival has evolved from a domestic celebration into one of the country’s most significant cultural and economic events, attracting both locals and foreign tourists.

In 2026, the organizers position the anniversary event as an important showcase for the national wine brand Wine of Moldova, Unexpectedly Great (Wine of Moldova, Unexpectedly Great), as well as a broader statement of the country’s ambitions in wine tourism and exports.

From national celebration to industry platform

National Wine Day was created to celebrate Moldova’s centuries-old wine culture, dating back over 5,000 years. However, for 25 years, the event has evolved alongside the country’s wine sector.

“The history of this celebration reflects the country’s own transformation,” says Stefan Iamandi, director of the NBVV. – Over the past two decades, Moldova has redefined itself as an emerging wine center, combining centuries-old winemaking traditions with modern innovations.”

What started as a national celebration has evolved into a strategic industry platform. Today, the event acts as both a festival for consumers and a promotional tool for the country’s producers.

The wine sector accounts for approximately 3% of Moldova’s GDP and almost 8% of total exports, which emphasizes its importance not only for tourism.

Stefan Iamandi argues that wine remains deeply rooted in Moldova’s identity.

“Moldova is unique as a wine producing country because wine here is not just an agricultural product, but a defining part of the national identity, history and scale.”

And adds: “With a winemaking tradition dating back more than 5,000 years, Moldova combines a rich heritage with a modern, quality-oriented approach.”
