Sugar is the leader of the global “anti-trend” of rising food prices

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) April price index for sugar is down 4.7% from March's value. Compared to April last year, the April 2026 global sugar price index is 21.2% lower.

As noted in the FAO report, the fall in the index in April was mainly due to more favorable production forecasts in key producing countries in Asia, especially China and Thailand. The start of the new harvest in key southern sugarcane growing areas in Brazil, amid favorable weather conditions, also increased the overall downward pressure on world sugar prices.

In addition to sugar, the FAO price index for dairy products alone fell in April, down 1.1 percent from March and 22.1 percent below last year’s level.

For all other groups of products included in the FAO price monitoring, as previously reported by Logos Press, the price indices increased. Moreover, prices reached the maximum for the last three months.
