The day passed under the banner of Italian and Dutch athletes, who brought their national teams two gold medals each. The first gold medal was won by a representative of Australia, who successfully performed in freestyle.
Italian fighting spirit in all its glory
Two Italian athletes were unrivaled among alpine skiers and speed skaters. Federica Brignone became an Olympic champion for the first time in her career, overcoming the alpine ski run faster than the others in the super-G. The athlete also set a record by becoming the oldest Olympic champion in the history of the Winter Games at the age of 35.
The second gold medal at the home Olympics was won by speed skater Francesca Lollobrigida in the 5,000 meters. The athlete, who turned 35 on February 7, is also brightly welcoming the sunset of her career.
Arianna Fontana could have helped the national team to a triple success, but lost by less than one second to the Netherlands’ Xandra Welzeboer in the 500-meter short track. The Italian won two gold medals at the Games and, for the first time in the history of women’s competition in six Winter Olympics.. She now has 13 Olympic medals.
The hosts’ fighting spirit was reinforced by the mixed luge team, which won bronze medals in the team relay. Only luge skiers from Germany and Austria performed better than them.
King and Queen of Ice from the Netherlands
Both gold medals of the Dutch team were won in the short track events. In addition to the aforementioned Xandra Welzebur, Jens van Wout made it to the top of the podium. He was the best in the 1,000 meters.
These victories allowed the Netherlands to climb to ninth place in the team medal standings. They have three gold and three silver medals to their credit.
Another success for the Swedish skiers
Sweden’s Frida Karlsson became a two-time Olympic champion by winning the 10km freestyle ski race. A few days earlier she won the skiathlon. Her compatriot Ebba Andersson won the silver medal, while American Jessica Diggins won bronze.
Elizaveta Hlusovic, representing the Republic of Moldova, was 104th among 108 finishers. She was more than eight minutes behind the winner. The 18-year-old athlete’s performance at her debut Games is over.
The hosts of the Games move up to the second place
After the sixth day, the Italians (six gold, three silver and eight bronze medals) moved up to second place in the team medal standings, displacing the USA, Germany and Sweden.
The Norwegians hold the lead (seven gold, two silver and five bronze medals), but the advantage over their pursuers is shrinking. The Americans with four gold, seven silver and three bronze medals round out the top three.
