Contracting Parties to the Energy Community include Moldova. The Center will facilitate the creation of renewable energy acceleration zones in areas previously used for coal mining, where renewable energy projects can move forward faster thanks to simplified procedures based on strategic spatial planning that protects sensitive ecosystems.
“Building public confidence in the energy transition is a key aspect of this mission, especially in regions affected by the coal phase-out and undergoing broader structural change,” the Energy Community Secretariat said in a press release.
Such an area in our part of the continent is part of Ukraine, where ongoing work supported by the European Climate Fund is underway. It focuses on developing cross-border renewable energy acceleration zones in the five regions bordering the EU and Moldova, as well as supporting national efforts to accelerate renewable energy deployment.
This activity is further complemented by the Secretariat’s cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, whose EU-recognized methodology for identifying renewable energy fast-track zones now serves as a model of best practice.
