According to the Study on the socio-economic situation of refugees conducted by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the average duration of residence of refugees from Ukraine in Moldova is 32 months. Almost half (47%) came from Odessa region, 14% – from Mykolaiv region, 9% – from Kherson region.
Every second family lost income during the last year, and every fourth family has no savings. One third of families include the elderly or people with chronic illnesses, and 12% have disabilities.
However, there has been an increase in access to rights: 97% have temporary protection status, 86% know how to use services, 61% of children are attending school, and 70% of parents plan to enroll their children next year. Four out of ten refugees are employed or actively seeking employment.
The majority of households (72%) plan to stay in their current place of residence in the next year, 20% have not made a decision yet. Only 4% of respondents want to return to their usual place of residence in Ukraine.
The survey was conducted among 532 households of Ukrainian refugees in Moldova. It confirms that integration of refugees is progressing, but economic vulnerability, lack of food, medicines and medical care, and insufficient funds to buy clothes remain serious problems.
At the beginning of this year there were about 130 thousand Ukrainian refugees in Moldova. Chisinau remains the main city of accommodation, hosting more than 59% of all persons under temporary protection in Moldova, according to official data from the Inspectorate General for Migration as of June 2025.
