According to the Pomușoarele Moldovei Association, only a few local producers are currently offering raspberries in commercially significant quantities. These are the berries of the Italian variety “Enrosadira” and the Polish variety “Przehyba”. Raspberries of these varieties are characterized by outwardly very attractive, relatively large berries of conical shape, sour-sweet flavor.
In small quantities, the first raspberries also appeared in the capital’s wholesale and retail markets. Surprisingly, in these outlets, the starting price of raspberries is many times lower than in supermarkets. The chairwoman of Pomușoarele Moldovei, Anneta Ganenco, suggested in a conversation with Logos Press that the abnormally cheap first raspberry is most likely not a farmer’s berry, but “a situational one-time sale of a small batch of Ukrainian raspberries, which for some reason did not reach the European market and dissolved on the Moldovan market”. Especially since Moldovan store retailers traditionally experience a shortage of raspberry supplies throughout the season – from early summer to fall.
Raspberries in Moldova are mainly export berries. In the last few years, out of 3-4 thousand tons of Moldovan berries supplied to foreign markets, almost half of the goods are fresh and frozen raspberries.
