The freight transport sector recorded significant year-over-year growth. The volume of freight transported increased by 20.6%, and freight turnover rose by 14.4%. The data was provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which noted that Moldova’s rail, road, river, and air transport companies transported 10.2 million metric tons of cargo. The total volume of freight transportation amounted to 2,811.9 million ton-kilometers.
Road transport accounted for 87.1% of the freight transported. According to the NBS, road transport companies carried 8.9 million metric tons of cargo in the first half of the year, of which 6.4 million metric tons (72.5% of the total) were domestic shipments and 2.4 million metric tons (27.5%) were international shipments.
The share of cargo transported by road in Chisinau was 54.5%, in the northern regions—15.1%, in the central regions—20.2%, in the southern regions—5.2%, and in the Gagauz Autonomous Region—5.0%.
Rail transport, which accounts for 12.4% of the total cargo volume, showed growth in both the volume of cargo transported and the duration of transport by 23.2% and 30.8%, respectively, in January–June 2026.
In January–June 2026, compared to January–June 2025, air freight recorded a decline in both the volume of cargo transported and the distance traveled, by 53.6% and, respectively, 57.0%.
Domestic inland waterway transport showed a 31.0% decline in both the volume of cargo transported and the duration of transport.
