On August 24, the head of state took part in a meeting of leaders of the Coalition of the Willing, organized to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence.
“Since 2022, the Republic of Moldova has recorded nearly 60 violations of its airspace, and in 2026, that number has increased. Every missile and every drone shot down in Ukraine’s airspace means greater security for the countries of the region, including the Republic of Moldova. Our country is strengthening its airspace monitoring capabilities and cooperating with Ukraine and Romania to exchange information on airborne threats. This cooperation will continue,” stated Maia Sandu.
The head of state also spoke about regional transport connectivity. The routes connecting Moldova with Ukraine and Romanian ports are vital for the national economy and regional trade. The Republic of Moldova has reduced rail tariffs for grain transit to Romanian ports by 50 percent—a measure that helps maintain freight traffic on the Moldovan railway and support Ukrainian exports.
“Together with Ukraine, we are working to open new transport routes, including the Cosăuți–Yampil bridge—a project eagerly awaited on both banks of the Dniester,” the Presidential Administration reported.
Zelensky and Dan Are Expected in Chisinau
As a reminder, Moldovan President Maia Sandu awarded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the “Order of the Republic”—the country’s highest state honor. The decree was signed on August 24, when Ukraine celebrates Independence Day. Zelensky, in turn, awarded Sandu the Order of Princess Olga, First Class—one of Ukraine’s highest state honors.
According to Romanian media reports, Volodymyr Zelensky and Romanian President Nicușor Dan will take part in events in Chișinău on August 27 to mark the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova.
