Onion prices are falling in Moldova

In the second half of July, Moldova’s vegetable market saw a trend of rapidly falling wholesale prices for onions. This week, the price fell by approximately 1–1.5 lei/kg, averaging 4 lei/kg. Market operators expect that the period of low onion prices will not last too long—no more than a month and a half.

At present, as wholesalers note, the market is experiencing a typical seasonal imbalance: an oversupply of produce from vegetable farms during the peak harvest season, coupled with low demand from industrial and household consumers. The situation is further exacerbated by the limited availability of specialized warehouses for storing vegetables. At the same time, early and mid-season onion varieties account for the majority of plantations in Moldova.

According to expert estimates, due to the decline in vegetable prices last year, onion plantations in Moldova for the 2026 harvest have shrunk by at least 10–15%, to an estimated 0.9–1 thousand hectares.
