At the same time, Musk promised to release a full-length version of the work by the end of 2026 using his AI tool, Grok Imagine, according to Forbes.
Musk proposed two versions of the new “Odyssey”
The announcement was prompted by a post from user X, who suggested that Musk give Mel Gibson $100 million to create his own version of “The Odyssey” — featuring historically accurate ships, weapons, and costumes, as well as dialogue that stays as close as possible to Homer’s original text and is delivered in Ancient Greek.
Musk replied briefly: “I’m down,” thereby confirming his willingness to support the idea. However, the publication emphasizes that there is no confirmation that the $100 million has already been allocated, that Gibson has agreed to participate in the project, or that such a film is currently in production.
At the same time, Musk stated that his own AI platform, Grok Imagine, will create a full-length “Odyssey” by the end of this year, which he called “historically accurate” and faithful to Homer’s work. Logos Press reported on Grok Imagine’s new capabilities.
To demonstrate the technology’s capabilities, Musk published a three-minute AI-generated clip featuring Odysseus and Calypso.
Thus, we are talking about two possible production models: an expensive traditional film with a professional director and actors, or a feature-length project created using generative artificial intelligence.
AI Challenges the Traditional Film Production Economy
Musk’s statement came shortly after the release of Christopher Nolan’s *Odyssey*, which became one of the biggest film projects of 2026. The film, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, grossed $264.1 million at the global box office during its opening weekend, setting a record among Nolan’s film debuts. Its production budget is estimated at approximately $250 million, with another $125 million or so, according to Forbes, spent on marketing.
It is against this backdrop that Musk’s statement takes on not only cinematic but also technological significance. If generative AI can indeed create feature-length films of acceptable quality, some of the costs associated with traditional production—from filming and sets to certain stages of visual effects work—could potentially be shifted to a digital environment.
However, Musk’s statement remains just a promise for now. There is no confirmed information regarding the budget, production plan, filming schedule, or quality of the future feature-length version of *Grok*.
Therefore, it is premature at this stage to compare the economics of such a project with Nolan’s $250-million production.
Furthermore, the very phrase “historically accurate ‘Odyssey’” requires some qualification: Homer’s work is an epic mythological poem, not a historical chronicle. Therefore, experts note that the focus is likely on creating the most authentic reconstruction of the supposed era and staying true to the text of the poem, rather than on literal historical accuracy.
For the content market, this story is significant because one of the most prominent advocates of generative AI is publicly proposing to use the technology not only for individual scenes or visual effects, but to create a full-length film.
The main question remains open: will Musk’s AI project be able to evolve from a demonstration of Grok’s capabilities into a commercially viable film? If this happens, such an experiment will set a precedent for the future economy of film production and other visual content.
