Thanks to this membership, the city of Chisinau gains access to best practices from other cities, as well as opportunities for cooperation, training, and knowledge sharing in this field.
To date, the capital has adopted a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) at the local level, which outlines the direction for developing a sustainable transportation system. The City Master Plan (CMP) is currently being updated, and the SUM’s guidelines will be integrated into the urban planning process.
The CIVITAS program, launched in 2002 by the European Commission, supports local authorities in developing, testing, and implementing solutions to create a more efficient transportation network through projects and research.
Simply put, it is a network of cities that have come together to collaboratively seek solutions: how to make transportation cleaner, safer, more convenient for everyone, and at the same time more efficient. The community includes local government representatives, experts, and activists. It currently includes more than 300 cities (including those outside the EU).
CIVITAS has several key areas of focus: promoting active mobility (walking, cycling), energy-efficient vehicles (electric buses and other types of eco-friendly transportation), intelligent transportation systems, and so on.
