Nuclearelectrica, the owner of the nuclear power plant, stated that Unit 2, which is still in operation, will stop generating electricity on the morning of August 13.

In the area around the plant, the Danube’s water level has continued to drop sharply, making it impossible to draw water for the plant’s technical needs.

This morning, the river level dropped to -230 centimeters, which, according to technical regulations, requires the plant to be shut down.

Emergency dredging operations have begun upstream, but Nuclearelectrica asserts that it is already too late and that “the shutdown of the plant is inevitable.”

The second power unit at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant accounted for approximately 10–15% of Romania’s electricity consumption. The first power unit at Romania’s Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, which also supplied about 10% of the total electricity consumed in the neighboring country, was shut down on July 28, 2026.

The electricity shortage in Romania has already led to the risk of blackouts in the Republic of Moldova. The decommissioning of the second unit will exacerbate this risk, especially during periods of high temperatures.
